Clearview Intelligence supports Worcestershire County Council deliver data driven bus priority innovation

AI powered transport technology is providing new insight into bus reliability and congestion management

Clearview Intelligence has successfully delivered an innovative proof-of-concept project with Worcestershire County Council that is helping its highways team better understand the relationship between bus movements, traffic congestion and traffic signal performance.

Located at the busy Abbey Bridge Junction in Worcester city centre, the project uses Clearview’s Insight Vision AI multi-modal sensors to detect, classify and track buses, and general traffic including cyclists and pedestrians in real time. The technology provides accurate movement and journey time data, enabling the Council to assess how dynamic bus priority measures could improve their reliability and overall network performance.

The project is part of the Council’s Bus Service Improvement Plan (BSIP), designed to test whether data-driven bus priority could measurably reduce traffic congestion and improve journey times without displacing congestion to elsewhere on the network.

By combining AI-powered vision with Floating Vehicle Data within the Insight platform, the Council gains both junction-level and network-wide visibility of the impact to bus performance. Real-time journey time and congestion data enables officers to identify where delays are occurring and understand their impact on bus reliability, while AI vision sensors provide additional context around bus arrivals and dwell times at key locations. Together, these datasets help distinguish between delays caused by general traffic conditions and those associated with bus activity, allowing the Council to target signal priority interventions more effectively and develop evidence-based strategies to improve bus journey times.

All the project data is securely hosted in Clearview’s Insight Platform, bringing together vision analytics, vehicle data and signal performance metrics to provide the robust evidence base for future transport planning and decision-making.

Gavin Loach, Traffic Control Systems Manager at Worcestershire County Council, said: “This project highlights the value of using data and innovation to support better transport outcomes for our communities. A key aspect of the project was its rapid deployment. By using the above ground sensors and existing infrastructure, the installation took only two days, avoiding disruptive road works while delivering valuable real-time insights into traffic conditions. The project provides the strong evidence base needed to support more sustainable travel choices across Worcester.”

Mac Needham, Business Development Manager at Clearview Intelligence, said: “This project shows how local authorities can capture and use high-quality real-time transport data for better and more informed decision-making. By combining AI-powered vision sensing technology and traffic data with dynamic signalling, Worcestershire County Council has created a scalable evidence-led approach to improve their bus service reliability and safeguard overall network performance.”
