Volvo Trucks secures substantial deal with paper industry leader DS Smith

DS Smith Logistics recently welcomed 61 new Volvo FM 460 Globetrotter 6×2 tractor units, marking a significant update to their fleet as part of an extensive renewal strategy.

These vehicles, acquired through a lasting contract-hire deal with TIP Group, are set to replace older models previously supplied by a competing firm within the bustling realms of paper, packaging, and recycling operations.

The decision to opt for Volvo Trucks was influenced by the impressive results demonstrated by a trial vehicle, showcasing notable advantages in reliability, fuel efficiency, and payload capabilities.

India Wacher, the Fleet Compliance & HS/E Manager at DS Smith Logistics, shared: “Securing this sizeable fleet upgrade is a pivotal move for our company, replacing our full complement of 61 lorries. Our selection process was exhaustive, evaluating numerous vehicle manufacturers before identifying the Volvo FM as the premier choice for our operations.

“Our lorries undergo rigorous use, necessitating a reliance on vehicles known for their dependability, a quality we’ve come to associate with Volvo. Our decision-making also prioritised safety, environmental considerations, and vehicle weight, alongside the availability of the product. The FM series offers us a comprehensive solution.”

TIP Group’s Key Account Manager, Steve Stanton, noted: “DS Smith tasked us with rejuvenating their fleet with vehicles that not only promise reliability but also benefit from a lighter tare weight. The Volvo FM 460 Globetrotter 6×2 tractor units, especially when equipped with alloy wheels, aluminium air tanks, and optimised fuel tanks, boast a notable weight advantage. Volvo’s esteemed track record for delivering quality vehicles and exceptional support played a significant role in our mutual confidence.”

Facilitated by Jose Lavarello, Volvo Trucks UK & Ireland’s Key Account Manager, these new FMs, coupled with curtainsider trailers from TIP, are designated for transporting paper reels from DS Smith’s Kemsley Paper Mill to various locations across the UK, while also bringing in bailed fibre for recycling back into paper reels.

This round-the-clock operation will see the FMs enduring double shifts, accumulating about 130,000 miles annually.

Each tractor is equipped with a D13k Step E engine, boasting 460 hp and a peak torque of 2300 Nm, complemented by Volvo’s 12-speed I-Shift automated gearbox and I-See predictive cruise control for enhanced sustainability and efficiency through optimal gear shifts and speed regulation. To further improve fuel efficiency, all new lorries come fitted with A-rated Michelin X Line Energy tyres.

Enhanced safety features include multiple cameras accessible via a nine-inch side display for drivers, and an additional lower window on the passenger side to comply with the 3-star Direct Vision Standard (DVS) for operations in central London. Moreover, Volvo’s distinctive V-Shaped LED headlamps ensure clear visibility for DS Smith Logistics’ drivers.

Wacher further commented on the importance of safety and driver comfort, especially when navigating Transport for London’s controlled zones, emphasizing the goal to equip their staff with the finest tools for their tasks.

The interiors of the Globetrotter cabs are outfitted with several Volvo optional packages for added comfort and convenience, including the Drive+ package with electronic air conditioning, dual armrests on the driver’s seat, and extra storage. The Living package for solo occupants adds more storage, a bottle holder, and a cab parking heater, alongside a Volvo Media package featuring a 12” dynamic instrument cluster, enhancing the overall driving experience.
