DFT Reveals Next Phase of Government’s Zero Emission Initiative
The commitment of £200 million from ministers towards the Zero-Emission Road Freight Decarbonisation (ZERFD) program is a significant step in reducing the risks associated with the transition to Net Zero.
For businesses to make informed investment decisions in the coming years, they need clarity and assurance. We believe that this program will address many of the practical concerns raised by our members, providing hauliers with the confidence to invest in zero-emission trucks, essential for reducing carbon emissions in our sector.
While we wholeheartedly support the Net Zero initiative, it’s crucial to acknowledge the substantial risks involved in adopting untested vehicle technologies, especially in maintaining the high service standards the public expects from logistics.
We are committed to taking practical steps to realize a realistic Net Zero, ensuring support for operators of all sizes. This announcement aligns with two recent initiatives we’ve launched to drive down emissions.
The first is the establishment of our Net Zero Forum in August 2023. Comprising a diverse representation of our membership, this forum will guide our interactions with the various stakeholders crucial to making Net Zero a reality, drawing from their feedback and real-world experiences.
The second is the release of our “roadmap” to Net Zero in early September, providing a structured approach to the tasks ahead. This will enable us to decarbonize HGV and coach fleets in a rational and viable manner.
Richard Smith, RHA Managing Director, emphasized, “Unlike cars and vans, the path to decarbonization for trucks and coaches remains uncertain due to significant technical challenges. Today’s announcement regarding the progression of ZERFD demonstrates the government’s clear and supportive stance towards our sector in the challenging transition ahead.”
“Meeting the HGV phase-out dates set by ministers will necessitate close collaboration among the numerous stakeholders involved. Tough decisions may be required, including practical exemptions and tax incentives to reduce costs. It is crucial that all perspectives are considered to make well-informed choices.”
“We eagerly anticipate building on the outcomes generated by ZERFD to deliver a Net Zero solution that benefits everyone.”
