The truck that has been Volvo’s best-selling model marks three decades of innovation

Volvo’s most sold truck celebrates 30 years of innovation

It’s time for a celebration! Yesterday marked the 30th anniversary of Volvo Trucks unveiling the Volvo FH, a truck that has become the company’s all-time best-seller. Right from its inception, the Volvo FH has been known for its distinctive exterior and interior design, exceptional driver comfort, and cutting-edge efficiency and safety solutions.

The Volvo FH stands as one of the most successful models in the industry, having sold nearly 1.4 million trucks in approximately 80 global markets. It made its debut in 1993, introducing a new era in trucking with its exceptional drivability and fuel efficiency. Now, three decades later, the Volvo FH has achieved iconic status.

Roger Alm, President of Volvo Trucks, remarks, “The Volvo FH epitomizes a customer-centric approach and a model that has been pushing boundaries for three decades. In critical areas such as driver comfort, fuel efficiency, safety, and productivity, we’ve continually enhanced this truck. I take great pride in the fact that today our customers can order the Volvo FH in electric, gas, or diesel-powered variants.”

A Trailblazing Pioneer from the Start

The Volvo FH has consistently led the way in innovation. It was launched with an entirely new chassis that allowed for versatile solutions across various transport applications. The model’s revolutionary driveline was complemented by brand-new 12- and 16-liter engines, all enclosed within a redesigned cab that offered exceptional aerodynamics and driver comfort.

Innovation has remained at the forefront over the years, always rooted in Volvo’s core values of safety, quality, and environmental responsibility. Notable innovation milestones over the past three decades include the introduction of the driver’s airbag, the I-Shift automated gearbox, and Volvo Dynamic Steering, providing effortless steering and exceptional maneuverability.

In terms of exterior design, the distinctive slim rear-view mirrors enhance direct visibility for the driver, while V-shaped headlamps improve both visibility and driver comfort, contributing to the truck’s unique appearance. These examples underscore how Volvo’s technology and design consistently provide valuable benefits for the driver.

Ylva Dalerstedt, Long Haul Segment Manager at Volvo Trucks, adds, “The first-generation Volvo FH revolutionized the concept of a modern truck. Since then, we have continued to set new industry standards, introducing five subsequent generations of this remarkable truck.”

“Our recipe for success has been to leverage the latest technology in a way that always delivers clear advantages for our customers and drivers. As evidence of our ongoing commitment to improvement and evolution, I’m exceptionally proud that the Volvo FH is the only truck to have been awarded ‘International Truck of the Year’ three times.”
