The first heavy-duty FMX electric concrete mixer from Volvo Trucks
Volvo Trucks has supplied CEMEX with its first fully electric, zero-emission heavy-duty concrete mixer – the Volvo FMX Electric. This battery-electric truck is part of an ongoing global collaboration between the two companies to develop and scale emissions-free transport for the demanding construction industry.
Roger Alm, President of Volvo Trucks, said:
“We are very happy to take this important step in the partnership with CEMEX. Both our companies have committed to ambitious sustainability targets and collaboration is the way to get there. Together we will work to implement emission-free transport in the construction industry. Our electric trucks are zero emissions and their silent operation also provide a better environment for people working at construction sites, as well as for residents living nearby.”
Fernando A. González, CEO of CEMEX added:
“CEMEX is committed to becoming a net-zero CO2 company; innovation and collaboration are at the core of this commitment. Our partnership with Volvo has incredible potential to contribute to the decarbonisation of our business. Rolling out our first fully electric ready-mix truck is a strong progress in that direction.”
Electrification of concrete transportation remains challenging due to heavy loads and continuous mixing requirements but the newly deployed Volvo FMX Electric mixer can operate for a full day’s work on just one top up charge.
Volvo Trucks is leading heavy electric truck production in Europe and America with a target to sell half of new trucks as electric by 2030. Meanwhile, CEMEX’s vision is reduce their net greenhouse gas emissions in their value chain by 2040 at latest – efforts which have been recognised by both companies being founding members of ‘First Mover Coalition’, an international organisation set up by US Special Presidential Envoy John Kerry aimed at encouraging low carbon purchasing commitments from businesses worldwide.
The Volvo FMX Electric concrete mixer features: two motors delivering 330kW, four batteries generating 360kWh; powered hydraulic system sourced from traction battery; I-Shift transmission; wheelbase 4100mm; and 9m3 concrete mixer superstructure capacity.
