DVSA Trialing Remote Tachograph Sensing Equipment
The Driving Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) today announced they are trialing new equipment that will enable them to remotely download tachograph data from the roadside as the vehicles travel.
As well as being able to determine driving hours infringements, the system being trialed will also be able to determine if there any breaches of rules and will cover:
- If a tachograph card is inserted
- If a tachograph has been tampered with
- If it is correctly calibrated
Head of Regulatory Services and Transformation Caroline Hicks: “We are committed to exploring every available opportunity to help us to prevent dangerously tired drivers putting themselves and the everyday road user at serious risk.
“The new technology is a potential game changer in identifying tachograph violations. We are also excited to see where this leads in helping us to identify operators that break all kinds of safety rules.”
The DVSA points out that the majority of operators are working hard towards compliance and safety, but elements of deliberate and serious rule breaking & falsification.
In 2021-22, DVSA issued 1,317 drivers’ hours prohibitions nationally for heavy goods vehicles, public service vehicles and applicable light goods vehicles.
