UK Government pledges £20m to improve roadside facilities for HGV drivers.
The UK government has pledged £20m in investment to improve roadside facilities which will include an extra 11,000 safe and secure parking spaces. As part of the government and national highways existing users and communities fund, the investment drive has come amid back lash amongst the industry on the standards offered to drivers of HGVs. Furthermore, the cash will be used to improve on-site facilities such as security, showers & eating facilities.
The UK has long fallen behind continental counterparts. France for example offers large secure parking areas across the country that is accessible at a fraction of the price of locations in the UK. Mags Simpson, Logistics UK’s head of policy engagement, says that the additional funding is a “positive step forward”.
