Iran crisis pushes up oil – and UK hauliers will feel it at the pump
Rising tensions involving Iran are already feeding through to global oil markets, and UK hauliers and transport companies are likely to see the impact in higher diesel bills over the coming weeks.
Whenever instability threatens supply in the Middle East, oil traders react quickly. A particular concern is the Strait of Hormuz, a key shipping route for a significant share of the world’s crude. Even the risk of disruption is enough to push up prices, as insurers raise premiums and tanker operators factor in added costs.
Brent crude, the international benchmark used to price much of the world’s oil, has climbed sharply on the back of the latest developments. For UK operators, that matters. Diesel prices track crude movements closely, and when oil rises quickly, pump prices often follow.
For hauliers running tight margins, fuel remains one of the highest variable costs. A few pence per litre increase can translate into hundreds or thousands of pounds extra per vehicle each year, depending on mileage. Smaller operators and those locked into fixed-rate contracts are particularly exposed.
There is also a wider knock-on effect. As transport costs rise, pressure builds across supply chains. Some operators will look to fuel surcharges to recover costs, while others may have to absorb at least part of the increase to stay competitive.
How long prices stay elevated will depend on how the situation develops. But for now, the direction of travel is clear: if oil continues to rise on the back of the Iran crisis, diesel costs for UK hauliers are set to follow.
