Several unofficial fuel protests have been planned in a move to highlight the frustration felt across the industry in relation to the unsustainable rises in the costs of diesel. With diesel costs now at an all time high, transport bosses have felt their already paper thin margins eroded even further.
With what seems like little intervention from the government, feedback from the industry is that it has no choice other than to bring the county to a standstill. Whether this is the correct action or not, it highlights the frustration being felt across the country.
A number of Facebook groups have been set up in order to garner support. One group has gained nearly 35k followers in just a few weeks.
A 5ppl cut in duty in April saw little effect on prices and there have been further concerns that retailers have pocketed the reduction and not passed onto consumers. With the government continuing to take nearly 50% of all costs for tax, the industry has felt frustrated that prices have risen at such a rate practically unimpeded.
A government petition has also gained traction asking for an independent regulator to monitor and regulate fuel pricing.
Wholesale prices peaked this week; however analysts predict further rises may be on the horizon.
